Assalamualaikum
:: Tafseer class for Sisters::

Who’s the teacher:: Reem Othman
Where:: Prayer Room in Sears
When :: Every Friday 3 – 4 pm (Time may change)

Alhamdulillah, we start the class today with the introduction of Surah Yusuf. InshaAllah we are going to spend a few weeks on this surah. :)

Notes from today’s class:

Surah Yusuf is a Meccan sura and it was revealed during the year of sadness. This was the year when Khadijah and Abu Talib died. Rasulullah s.a.w was very sad because he lost two beloved people and also, he was attacked by his own families (uncles). It was a very depressive year for Rasulullah s.a.w. So, Allah revealed the story of Nabi Yusuf a.s so that rasulullah can relate to himself and reflect upon the story.

It is good to read this surah when one is depressed, oppressed and lonely. We’ll see that our problems are nothing compared to what Nabi Yusuf a.s has faced. So, inshaAllah it will bring humbleness and peace to us when we read this surah. Also, what can we learned from this surah is to rely on Allah. We must have hope for Him because Allah’s plan will prevail over ours. Do our Best, and the Leave it to Allah because Allah Knows what is BEST for us.

The tribulations faced by Nabi Yusuf a.s
1) hasad of his brothers
2) separation from family (his beloved father Nabi Ya’kub for 40 years)
3) he was thrown in the well (when he was 12 years old)
4) he became a servant (he inherited prophethood from his great grandfather Nabi Ibrahim a.s )(Yusuf al kareem, ibnul kareem, ibnul kareem, ibnul kareem)
5) seductions by women
6) poisoned for 9 years
7) Reputation dismantled
8) Tribulation of wealth
9) Giving forgiveness to his brothers
10) He was going from good to bad incidents constantly (he was constantly shocked with the bad things that happened to him)

When we faced with tribulation, there are 3 results of tribulations: ( using the analogy of gold, we are the gold, and to mold a gold we use fire, fire is the tribulations, so after the molding process, which type of gold will we be? )
1) zahabil ibrith – Pure Gold meaning we became more pure and firm on Allah’s path even though we were put through hardships
2) baina baina – Tinted gold, when we faced tribulations we questions why are these things happened to me, and it resulted in a little doubt in Allah. And we lost hope for Allah.
3) Aswaad – Black Gold, it is an impure gold, we became deviated from Allah’s path because we questioned too much and have no patience with the trials. (May Allah save us from this one)
We must be patience when faced with tribulations (bala’).

There are 3 levels of Patience:
1) Patience while in tribulations (Sabr bil-bala’) – lowest level of sabr because we have no choice when we faced bala’. We must be patience.
2) Patience in refraining from sins (sabr ‘alal-ma’asi) – we do our best to avoid the sin and not do it – middle level of patience because we are struggling against 4 things (shaytaan, hawa’ nafsu, and dunya). When we refrain ourselves from sins.
3) Patience of being obedient to Allah (sabr ‘ala-tha’at) – highest level of patience because being obedient is an order from Allah, so as much as we obey Him, He will have His Mercy on us.

P/S:: MashaAllah it was a great class, and I encouraged all sisters to join this class. It will be more interesting next week because we will start on the surah itself. Reem is really good. I give her two thumbs up !! :) : InshaAllah next class will be :
